NEXT STEPS FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Christian Credit Union wants to ensure they are attracting the next generation of members. Generation Y (born 1980 to 2000) likes to shop on the internet, prefer social media to email, and value community organizations. To understand more about these members and their needs, we conducted a focus group with several young people between the ages of 18 to 34.
What we discovered is that young people have a lot amount of information available to them on the internet, but that information does not always provide them with a clear answer. What they really need is advice from someone they can trust. A lot of things change when you finish high school, attend post-secondary education, enter the workforce, meet the man or woman of your dreams, and settle down and start a family.
Christian Credit Union offers financial planning advice to members of all ages and we have a number of resources on our website to help with budgeting, buying your first home, and saving for retirement. What we needed was a way present that information so that it was easy to find and attractive to young adults. We also needed to promote two employees of the Credit Union as representatives for young adults.
I chose the name Next Steps for Young Adults and created a landing page on our website. I also broke down the life events into six categories and created links to relevant information, calculators, budgets, products, and government resources. We promoted this tool on our website, Facebook, on printed statements and in-branch. The representatives also contacted members when they turned 17 to discuss their future goals and plans.
Next Steps for Young Adults is an important resource for our next generation of members. The resource continues to evolve as needs change and we find better ways to connect with Generation Y. Today we are having more conversations with young adults to help them make a plan. They are getting the advice they need to go to school, buy their first car, or start their own business.
